That is what the Dodgers are working with. The deal has been finalized.
Today, there was a huge blockbuster, post-deadline, waiver trade between the already stacked Los Angeles Dodgers and the struggling, sub .500 Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are sending 1B Adrian Gonzalez, P Josh Beckett, LF Carl Crawford, and 3B Nick Punto to L.A. for 1B James Loney, P Rubby De La Rosa, 2B Ivan De Jesus, OF Jerry Sands, and P Allen Webster from the Dodgers. While Carl Crawford won’t play this year due to Tommy John Surgery, the other expensive assets immediately make the Dodgers a favorite in the National League, not only this year, but for a few more years to come. The light has been shone on the Red Sox intentions, they are folding their playoff hopes for the next few years and trying to retool in one way or another. Perhaps they are trying to insert some much needed youth into their aging lineup core. After dealing Kevin Youkilis earlier this season, Boston is trying to facilitate the development of a new group of Red Sox superstars fit for Fenway park. The BoSox still have the ability to compete now, but not for much longer with a roster centered around Dustin Pedroia and an aging David Ortiz. What will this mean for new skipper Bobby Valentine? Only time will tell. Hopefully, for baseball as a whole, there will be a new Boston regime who buys in to Valentine’s managerial style, producing another competitive run from the Boston Red Sox. It is always exciting when superstars are moved late in the season, especially coast to coast.
With the Dodgers trailing the Giants and Melky Cabrera out (steroids), this will definitely change the balance of power in the NL West now and for the foreseeable future. The Dodgers now have the power hitting first baseman that they have lacked for years now. Loney was a decent option, but far from the championship cornerstone they needed. The L.A. Blue is now better than ever. Los Angeles’s new ownership is serious about winning, and that’s all a fan can ask for. Now if we can only get their fan base to pronounce their name correctly. Go Doyers….I mean Dodgers!
